Transforming My Guava Surplus into a Delicious Brew

by | Food as Medicine, Holistic Remedies, Nutrition, Traditional East Asian Medicine, Women's Health

Every holiday season, my neighbor would generously share bagfuls of guavas from their bountiful garden. Initially, I was at a loss, unsure of how to use these vibrant fruits. They sat on my kitchen counter, their sweet aroma filling the room, as I pondered over what to do with them.

Then inspiration struck. I decided to experiment with a simple recipe that would not only warm me up but also capture the essence of the holiday season. The result was a delightful guava and ginger tea that has since become a staple in my home during the festive period.

Benefits of Guava, Ginger and Honey

Guavas are a nutritional powerhouse, offering significant benefits for individuals dealing with chronic illness. They are exceptionally high in vitamin C, which acts as a potent antioxidant, helping to combat oxidative stress, reduce inflammation and support the immune system. The dietary fiber in guavas supports digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and aiding in detoxification. Additionally, guavas are known to support heart health; their potassium content helps regulate blood pressure, while the fiber and antioxidants can improve cholesterol levels. These attributes make guavas a valuable addition to a balanced diet, contributing to overall well-being.

Adding ginger and honey to guava tea not only enhances its flavor but also amplifies its health benefits.

Ginger is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help alleviate digestive discomfort and boost the immune system. It also has a warming effect that can soothe sore throats and reduce nausea.

Honey, a natural sweetener, is rich in antioxidants and has antibacterial properties, supporting cellular health and resilience. Together, ginger and honey complement the nutritional profile of guavas, creating a soothing, health-boosting beverage that supports digestion, immunity, and overall wellness.

The Perfect Holiday Brew: Guava and Ginger Tea

This guava and ginger tea is incredibly easy to make and offers a refreshing twist to your usual holiday beverages. Here’s how you can make it:

Ingredients:

4 ripe guavas, sliced
1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
4 cups of water
Honey, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Ingredients:

Slice the guavas and ginger. There’s no need to peel the guavas; just ensure they’re washed thoroughly.
Note: If you have a lot of guavas like me, I like to make them in a big batch in a large stock pot – just add more ginger and water.

2. Boil the Mixture:

In a large pot, combine the guava slices, ginger, and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

3. Simmer:

Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.

4. Strain and Sweeten:

Strain the tea into cups, discarding the solids. Add honey to taste, stirring until dissolved.

5. Serve and Enjoy:

Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy the soothing warmth of this festive drink.
