I recently faced a frustrating experience with our healthcare system that I know many of you can relate to. After a painful calf injury, I had to insist on getting the imaging I needed. Despite the pain and impact on my life, I was initially dismissed by my doctor. 😤 (For the full story of how my calf injury happened and how it almost derailed my Joshua Tree adventure, read this post.)
I walked into the doctors office two weeks ago, in excruciating pain, barely able to walk and asked the doctor to help me find out how serious it was. I asked if they can do some imaging to see the extent of the injury. The doctor said I had to wait at least a week “to see” if it would get any worse before she would authorize any imaging 😱 In the meantime I was just to follow the RICE protocol - Rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
So I waited the required week and insisted it was still painful, I couldn’t walk and that interfered with work and all aspects of my life. Two weeks later I finally got the ultrasound. That’s when I found out that it was a serious tear.
Now I have to wait another 12 days before I can see a specialist to even discuss the results and get treatment 😨
To say that our modern medical system is broken is the most polite thing I can say to prevent me from getting on my soap box to shout on top of the mountain of just how messed up it really is. I’m angry as hell not only about my experience but the experience of so many others with even worse conditions that are being dismissed by their doctors and not getting access to the care you need.
I’ve heard it from my patients time and time again, not to mention from loved ones who experienced similar things.
This experience reminded me of the importance of being our own best advocates—and healers.
While waiting for medical intervention, I turned to the tools and remedies of Chinese medicine. With herbal poultices, trauma liniments, acupressure, and Qigong, I managed to control the inflammation and pain without medication.
