Improve Digestion with Acupressure and Phototherapy on Zu San Li Point

by | Acupressure, Blog

The name Zu San Li means Leg Three Li. It’s also known as the acupuncture point, ST 36. It’s located four finger widths below the kneecap, between the two bones of your lower leg.

The name describes the point’s function. Li is a measurement of distance that’s approximately one third of a mile. Li also means to regulate or rectify. Its name, Leg Three Li means that stimulating this point can enable a person to walk a further three li even if they’re exhausted or fatigued.

The Stomach channel is rich in qi (which means energy or life force) and blood. The Leg Three Li point supplements the Stomach channel so it can help your digestive system work better to maximize the nutrients and energy you get from food and drink.

Leg Three Li has many functions that support the digestive system and can help with abdominal discomfort, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion. It’s also a great immune support point.

Three ways to activate the Leg Three Li point:

1.  Acupuncture

2.  Acupressure

3.  AcuPatching™

1.  Acupuncture

My favorite way to activate the Leg Three Li point in the clinic is….you guessed it! Acupuncture!

Acupuncture uses very thin, sterile, and disposable needles on specific points on the body to stimulate them. It’s often a very strong point when needled. I use this point for a wide variety of conditions to support digestion, immunity, and to relieve pain along the Stomach channel. It’s also great for relieving morning sickness because it helps relieve nausea and vomiting.

2.  Acupressure

Acupressure is a great way to activate these points for self-care at home.

Acupressure applies pressure to a point for a specific amount of time. The principle is similar to acupuncture but instead of needles, you use your fingers to apply pressure to the point.

To activate the point, use your thumb and apply firm pressure to the point. Massage for 30 – 60 seconds. Repeat three times. You can do two or three sessions a day.

3.  AcuPatching™

AcuPatchingâ„¢ is the use of phototherapy patches on points. It combines the power of acupoint stimulation with light therapy and has a similar therapeutic effect as acupuncture. The best part is that AcuPatchingâ„¢ can be done at home.

I’ve been using phototherapy in my clinic for several years already using lasers for my pediatric patients. Then I found out about the Lifewave phototherapy patches. The patches are like lasers or red light therapy devices, except they use the body’s own infrared light frequencies and provide constant stimulation for up to 24 hours.

It’s a safe, effective technique where you use patches on specific acupoints on the body. There are no chemicals, drugs, or herbs on the patches. They are hypoallergenic and there is no latex. The phototherapy patches are safe for adults and children. Consult a health care practitioner if you are pregnant.

The patches use specific wavelengths of light to produce biochemical and physiological changes in your body. This stimulation of the acupoints helps promote your own body’s healing process.

How to use the patches and where to get them

I use phototherapy patches all the time and recommend them to patients to use at home. The patches can help enhance the effects of your acupuncture treatments by providing continued stimulation in between treatments. The patches can also be used alone. I have many patients who have received good results using only the patches at home.

Each patch can be used for up to 24 hours before being replaced with a new patch. The patches work with the bioelectricity of your body, so it’s important to stay very well hydrated while using them to ensure optimal results. Drink at least one large drink of water first before applying the patches. (Consume filtered water, AVOID coffee, juices, teas, beer or alcohol because they contribute to dehydration).

There are many different phototherapy patches to choose from. In a future post, I’ll go more into detail about the different patch functions if you’re interested in hearing more about them. For now, I’ll talk about the Energy Enhancer patches.

I like to use Energy Enhancer patches on Leg Three Li point to increase energy, reduce fatigue, reduce muscle soreness and improve digestion.

You can place the patch on top of the Leg Three Li point. The Energy Enhancer patches come in two colors, white and tan. They are paired together. Use the white Energy Enhancer on the right point and tan Energy Enhancer on the left point, see picture below.

If you’re interested in finding out where you can find the patches, click here for the link to my Lifewave store, or you can contact the clinic to get them. You can also get a personal recommendation on how to use patches for your specific health condition by making an appointment.
