“The rose speaks of love silently, in a language known only to the heart.” – Unknown

Slightly bitter, sweet and cooling the rose bud is one of my favorite herbs in my dispensary. Its fragrance is sweet, delicate and soothing. The scent has a calming effect, reduces anxiety and promotes relaxation.

In Chinese medicine it’s called Mei Gui Hua. It goes to the liver, spleen and chong channels. It has been used for centuries to improve heart and digestive health, relieve menstrual discomfort and promote vibrant skin.

Stagnation in Chinese medicine is a cause of illness and disease if it’s not removed. Mei Gui Hua helps disperse stagnation and moves the vital energy of the body called Qi. It’s also used to regulate blood circulation

In Chinese medicine, the Heart houses the Mind (Shen) and governs the blood. Emotional unrest, stress, or anxiety can disturb the Heart’s function, leading to symptoms like insomnia, palpitations, or restlessness. Mei Gui Hua is known to soothe the Heart and calm the Spirit, which can help alleviate these symptoms.

I like to include it in formulas when I want to have a calming effect on the heart especially for women who have PMS and menstrual pain.

Here are some of the benefits of Mei Gui Hua:

Relieves Menstrual Discomfort:

Mei Gui Hua is known for its effectiveness in relieving menstrual discomfort. It’s believed to help regulate the blood, reduce menstrual pain, and alleviate symptoms associated with Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) like mood swings and hormonal imbalance.

Improves Digestion:

This herb is often used to boost digestion. It’s said to harmonize the stomach and spleen, helping to improve appetite, reduce bloating, and alleviate symptoms of indigestion.

Skin Health:

Mei Gui Hua is also widely used for skincare purposes. It’s believed to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help improve skin health, reduce signs of aging, and promote a healthy complexion.

Mental Well-being:

As mentioned earlier, Mei Gui Hua is known to soothe the Heart and calm the Spirit in Chinese Medicine. This means it can help alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and insomnia, promoting mental well-being.

Heart Health:

Mei Gui Hua is often used to improve heart health. It’s said to help regulate blood circulation and calm the heart, which can contribute to overall cardiovascular health.

Mei Gui Hua, or the simple Rose Bud, has a lot to offer. The Rose Bud is a beautiful reminder that we can find wellness and peace in the simplest of nature’s gifts. The next time you encounter the aroma of a rose, take a moment to breathe it in deeply, appreciating not just its pleasing scent, but also the profound effects it can have on your body and mind.
